Break Time

It’s the seventh-inning stretch. This is a baseball saying for a late break in the action and applies to the Grand Event as well as the final break is upon us.

The blinds will increase to 20,000/40,000 with a 40,000 big blind ante before increasing to 25,000/50,000 with a 50,000 big blind ante. Surviving players will bag chips for the evening after 3 a.m. after these two blind levels.

Heck of a Run for Johnstone

Level 21: 15,000/30,000 (30,000)
Entries: 93/1,441

Unibet Poker qualifier William Johnstone was one of the friendliness new guys we have seen on tour. He had a heck of a run in the Grand Event but lost his stack in the “most classic way” when his queens didn’t win a flip against big slick.

Johnstone took 95th place for €1,310 and can live with his deep-run exit.

“It was a good run,” said Johnstone. “Not bad at all for a recreational player like myself. I took 95th place and went out in the most classic way.”

We hope to see Johnstone again at the Malta Poker Festival. He was visibly enjoying his experience and wish him the best of luck at his next event.

Ann-Roos Callens Last Lady Standing

Level 21: 15,000/30,000 (30,000)
Entries: 93/1,441

FLIP women’s group ambassador Ann-Roos Callens is representing and is the last lady standing in the Grand Event.

She is sitting with a stack of 700,000 still at the same table as David Lappin and Jonathan Briscoe White.

Best of luck to Ann-Roos for advancing to the final table and beyond similar to what La Sengphet did during the last Malta Poker Festival Grand Event in the Spring.

Level 20: 10,000/20,000 (20,000)
Entries: 107/1,444

Andrea Melluzzo three-bet jammed for less than ten big blinds from the button and was called by Guillaume Bessolles who opened from the hijack.

Andrea Melluzzo: A9
Guillaume Bessolles: Q9

Melluzzo won the hand with two pair after the 39A102 ran out on the board to double his stack.

Colin Cooper, who was also at the table, appeared even happier than Melluzzo about the outcome and was audibly clapping very loudly after Melluzzo won the hand.

Two-time Ladies First! Champion Chris Read Entering High Roller

Chris Read had a great run in the Grand Event but sometimes a good thing must come to an end. She shared she hit the rail in 115th place when her nines were no good against tens.

Although today was good for Read, yesterday was even better as she managed to ship the €150 Ladies First! event for more than €2,000. This was the second time Read has won this event to become the first two-time Ladies First! champion.

Read didn’t even take much of a break. She left her Malta Poker Festival and Women’s Poker Association trophies from the Ladies First! at the media desk and immediately entered the €1,100 High Roller. We wish Read the best of luck and will try to include more coverage about Read’s run in the High Roller either in the blog or as a follow-up after the event.

Akhoun Ousts Glansberg Before Doubling Brancati

Charif Akhoun

Level 20: 10,000/20,000 (20,000)
Entries: 113/1,444

Charif Akhoun was busy in back-to-back hands putting players at risk. First, Michel Glansberg three-bet jammed for about 10 big blinds and was called by Akhoun.

Michel Glansberg: A10
Charif Akhoun: 66

Glansberg connected with his ten on the 810K flop and was still ahead on the 4 turn. However, the J river improved Akhoun to a flush to eliminate Glansberg.

The next hand, Antonio Brancati open-jammed for 125,000 from the button and Akhoun called from the big blind.

Antonio Brancati: 88
Charif Akhoun: 97

Brancati’s snowmen held on the 5KJ24 runout to double his stack instead of meeting the same fate as Glansberg.

Charif Akhoun – 500,000
Michel Glansberg – 280,000
