Steven Penney fired out for 2,500 into a pot of around triple that with the K♠4♥9♠J♣K♦ already on the baord. Luciano Laurino tanked for several moments before he called.
Both players held a king for trips with Penny first turning over the K♦Q♦. Penney won the hand to add a few chips to his stack with a better kicker to his two pair after Laurino showed the K♦10♣.
Meanwhile, Head of Poker at Betsson Jostein Groedum is also at the table ready to win a few chips of his own.
More and more players keep filing into the tournament arena. Last night’s satellite qualifier Andre Wright is among the players in the field along with Cheryl Taylor, Gary Whitehead, Peter Varga, Albert Sapiano, Magnus Pukk, Pavle Pecelj, Mitchell Hynam, Yvonne Horning, Karl Gialanze, and Borge Dypvik.
Best of luck to this crew and all of the Day 1d players.
Cards are in the air for Day 1d after some announcements welcoming the players by Malta Poker Festival founder Ivonne Montealegre and MPF tournament director and Ludos Academy CEO Danilo De Berardinis.
The action began with already a sizeable field of 97 entries. This figure will continue to grow with late registration not closing until the beginning of Level 9, during which time players can re-enter twice per opening flight if they so choose.
The first three opening flights witnessed 130 players from the total of 548 entries advancing to Sunday’s Day 2.
Three Italians are currently on the top of the chip counts with Marco Cipriani leading the way after parlaying his 50,000 opening stack into a massive bag full of 800,000 in chips. Check out the top ten chip counts below leading into today’s Day 1d.
The 2023 Malta Poker Festival (MPF) Autumn Edition has been booming with plenty of players battling it out in the Grand Event, the side events, and, of course, cash games at the luxurious surroundings of Portomaso Casino for a week of thrilling poker action.
The crown jewel of the festival in the €500,000 guaranteed MPF €550 Grand Event powered by the Unibet DeepStack Open (UDSO) already attracted a banner field of 548 entries during the first three opening flights including 260 entries on Thursday’s Day 1c alone. With four more opening flights, who knows how big the Grand Event will grow.
While the focus of our coverage will be on the Grand Event starting when it kicks off at 2 p.m. on Friday, we will also sprinkle in some flavor from the side events and activities away from the poker action.
The Grand Event boasts seven opening flights from October 24-29 with surviving players battling it out for two more days on October 29-30 until the latest winner is crowned.
